Weight loss can be wonderful, but it often leaves a persistent loose flap of skin that protrudes around the midsection. With abdominoplasty, also called tummy tuck surgery in Toronto, Dr. Kara can give patients a flatter midsection - improving their self-confidence and body image.
In Toronto, tummy tuck surgery requires the skill and expertise of a highly qualified plastic surgeon. Dr. Mahmood Kara is a board-certified plastic surgeon whose training and experience ensures that you receive optimal results. Request a complimentary consultation online or call us at (888) 546-8179.
You may wish to consider getting a tummy tuck after pregnancy or weight loss to tighten up your skin and restore your natural appearance. Many people who undergo liposuction will also opt for the tummy tuck in order to maximize the benefits of surgery.
Patients should be non-smokers at a stable body weight, who are neither pregnant nor intend to become pregnant (for long-lasting results). Patients who have a history of bleeding or clotting disorders may be ineligible for a tummy tuck procedure. It’s important that you have reasonable expectations about what plastic surgery can do for you, so be sure to discuss it with Dr. Kara during your consultation.
The procedure takes place under general anaesthesia and requires between 2-5 hours. Dr. Kara will make incisions where scars can be concealed, typically from one hipbone to the other, just above the pubic region. In the case of a full abdominoplasty, the bellybutton will also be isolated through a circular incision. The skin is lifted, abdominal muscles are tightened and sutured, and liposuction may be performed. Some women undergoing abdominoplasty also choose to have breast augmentation performed at the same time.
The excess skin and tissue are then removed. If a full abdominoplasty has been performed, the bellybutton will have remained in place, and a hole in the skin flap will be formed to accommodate it. Dr. Kara will close the sutures with stitches and place two drain tubes below the main incision. These tubes will later be removed when fluid levels have evened out.
Recovery time for the tummy tuck can take up to 3 weeks, and Dr. Kara may prescribe medication for pain and swelling during the first few days. Gauze and compression are applied after the surgery. Patients are encouraged to begin walking around within 12-18 hours of the surgery, as this aids the recovery process. Compression garments should be worn for 6 weeks following the procedure. As with all surgeries, permanent scarring does occur, although the scars will largely fade with time.
