Trigger Finger Surgery in Toronto

Trigger finger is a condition that occurs when there is a size difference between the tendon and its protective sheath. Either the sheath has grown smaller or the tendon has become swollen. In this constricted space, the tendon locks, causing pain. The finger will become rigid whenever the tendon catches on the sheath, and will remain so until the tendon is able to move past the obstruction. When the finger finally opens, it snaps open with pain.

During trigger finger surgery in Toronto, the tendon sheath is released in order to allow the finger to straighten and the tendon to glide back and forth normally.

Choosing Trigger Finger Release: Who's a Good Candidate?

Individuals who suffer from a finger that has locked may be a good candidate for trigger finger release surgery. However, surgery is reserved for those from whom cortisone shots have not worked. Common complaints that indicate surgery often include:

  • Difficulty in fully extending a digit, which eventually snaps open with pain
  • History of diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis
  • Swelling of the affected digit
  • Stiffness in the fingers

Individuals with swollen fingers, numbness, or aching may need to be evaluated for carpal tunnel syndrome in Toronto.

Your Trigger Finger Release in Toronto

In Toronto, trigger finger surgery is performed in an office setting with local anesthesia. Dr. Kara makes a small incision in the distal palm, at the base of the affected digit. He then cuts along the tendon sheath at the point of the tendon's constriction, allowing the tendon to move normally. If ganglions (cysts containing fluid) are found to be contributing to your trigger finger, they will be removed during the surgery.

Results and Aftercare for Trigger Finger Release

You will need to arrange for a ride home after surgery, as you will not be able to use your hand until it has healed. Swelling and pain can be alleviated by applying ice, elevating the hand, and taking pain medications.

Following surgery, the affected hand will be bandaged or even put in a plaster splint pressure dressing, which will be removed within about three days. Most patients are able to return to work soon after surgery. Physical therapy is often recommended in order to regain strength and flexibility in the hand.
