Choosing to Get Liposuction: Who’s a Good Candidate?

Liposuction is best suited for patients who live and eat healthily, but find certain fatty deposits do not respond to a reasonable diet and exercise. Many women who are good candidates for liposuction can also benefit from breast implants.

The procedure can be used on many areas of the body, including:

• Neck and chin
• Upper arms
• Abdomen
• Buttocks
• Hips and thighs

Ideally, candidates should be relatively young, with stable body weight and skin that retains its elasticity. Obese patients are not usually suitable for liposuction, as liposuction is not a weight loss method. Men and women who have a large amount of excess skin in the abdominal area may be better suited for a tummy tuck.

Your Liposuction

General anaesthetic may be used for removal of larger fatty deposits, while localized anaesthetic may be used for smaller, more localized deposits. The surgery usually takes between one to two hours in an outpatient setting.

The procedure starts with a small incision near the specified area.

Results and Aftercare for Liposuction

After surgery, patients may experience fluid drainage from the incision, and Dr. Kara may insert a small drainage tube under the skin to prevent build-up. You may also be prescribed antibiotics to prevent infection. Pain, swelling, and soreness are common after liposuction, although these will fade after a few days. A small scar will be all that remains. Results are permanent with proper diet and exercise.

As with all surgery, there are some risks involved. Patients may experience infection, baggy skin, or fluid retention. These risks are minimized when you are in the hands of an experienced plastic surgeon who is familiar with the latest liposuction technology.
