Choosing to Get Breast Reduction: Who’s a Good Candidate?

Women with overly large breasts often find that they cause a number of physical and social problems, such as:

  • Chronic pain in the head, neck, back, and shoulders
  • Circulation and breathing problems
  • Infections or irritation in the breast crease
  • Bra strap indentations in the shoulder area
  • Social embarrassment or discomfort

Breast reduction surgery is not recommended for women who plan to breastfeed.

Nowadays, many men in Toronto choose breast reduction surgery to sculpt a more masculine chest. Large breasts among males can develop during adolescence and prove an enduring source of embarrassment, and with a recent surge in the popularity of plastic surgery among men, this procedure has become more popular than ever. Your Breast Reduction in Toronto

Surgery requires roughly 2-4 hours under general anaesthesia. The most common procedure involves an “anchor” incision that loops around the areola (the dark ring around your nipple), down the breast and horizontally across the breast crease. However, there are other methods available based upon the desires of the patient and the shape of the breast.

Once the incision has been made, Dr. Kara will remove excess skin, fat, and glandular tissue. The nipple will be reshaped and elevated, and then the incision will be stitched and covered with gauze and medical tape.

Results and Aftercare for Breast Reduction

Recovery from breast reduction surgery takes between 1-2 weeks, during which time you will wear a surgical bra to provide needed support. You should avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activity for at least a month after the surgery. In some instances, a surgical drain may be needed to remove excess fluids. Dr. Kara may prescribe pain medication in the event of excessive aching or swelling.

As with all surgeries, breast reduction leads to some scarring, and there may be complications that include infections, bleeding, breast asymmetry, or even permanent loss of sensation.
