For breast augmentation procedures in Toronto, Dr. Kara uses implants from 2 leading manufacturers: Mentor® and Allergan. Both implants are made of a silicone gel (not saline), which provides a natural look and feel. Finding the implant that is right for you will depend on your preferences regarding shape, size, texture, and profile.
Dr. Kara offers both round and anatomic gel implants in a variety of sizes. Rounded implants are generally chosen by those who want more fullness in their breasts, especially in the upper poles. Anatomic or "tear-drop" implants have a gentle slope that some say looks more similar to the curve of a natural breast. Your aesthetic goals and individual physical characteristics will determine which implant shape and size is right for you.
Either smooth or textured implants may be chosen for your procedure. Smooth implants have a smooth outer shell and are said to be less likely to cause "rippling" (wrinkling) of the skin. Textured breast implants are usually firmer than smooth implants and have a grainy or sandpaper texture, which is said to help prevent capsular contracture or "hardening of the breast." Each implant texture has its advantages and disadvantages, which you can further discuss with Dr. Kara during your consultation.
The implant "profile" refers to the degree of projection from the chest wall. Breast implants typically come in different profiles, depending on the manufacturer. Most offer low, moderate, and high implant profiles, and Mentor also includes "moderate plus" and "ultra-high" options. High projection implants have more height and are often appropriate for women who have had children or lost a significant amount of weight. Moderate or low profile implants, however, may be better suited for women who have a narrower chest or limited skin elasticity. Again, your individual anatomy will play a part in determining which breast implant profile is right for you.
During your consultation, Dr. Kara will take several measurements and evaluate your skin elasticity in order to recommend the appropriate implant. You will then be provided with different implant "sizers" to try on so that you can get a better idea of your results. Digital imaging may also be used to create a computerized image of your expected surgical outcome and can further assist with the decision-making process.
