Choosing Breast Augmentation: Who's a Good Candidate?

Many patients have small or asymmetrical breasts, and augmentation can enhance their feelings of attractiveness and positive self-image. Breast augmentation may also be used in conjunction with a breast lift in Toronto to improve the appearance of sagging breasts, or alongside reconstructive procedures following mastectomy for breast cancer.

Your Breast Augmentation

In Toronto, breast augmentation most often involves the use of implants: medical prosthetics with a solid silicone shell, filled with either saline or silicone. Saline implants can be filled during the surgery, which allows for a shorter scar, while silicone implants are lighter and feel more natural, but are also more expensive.

Dr. Kara will make an incision underneath the breast, around the nipple, or even in the armpit, and implant the prosthetic above or below the pectoral muscle. The incisions are then sutured. This procedure takes between 1-2 hours and is performed under a general anaesthetic.

Results and Aftercare for Breast Augmentation

While recovery from breast augmentation usually takes a few days, Dr. Kara specializes in the 24 Hour Recovery Breast Augmentation Technique, which means that he uses every tool and technique at his disposal to minimize inflammation, bruising, and tissue trauma. Patients can usually return to work in a day, although they must wear a special support bra for some days following the surgery.

Although breast implants do not have an expiration date, patients should be prepared for a revision surgery at some point in their life. In some cases, the body will recognize the implant as a foreign body and attempt to wall it off with a membrane that may contract over time. This is called capsular contracture, and makes the implant feel hard. Breast implant rupture is also a possibility. Other risks that inevitably come with surgery include infection, inflammation, and noticeable scar formation. If this occurs, you may want to consider removing or replacing your breast implants.
